This is something that catches EVERYONE out when they start SCUBA Diving, you're definitely not the first person to be confused and you'll certainly not be the last about the name of this course and what it does!
So, is the AOW course for Advanced divers?
NO!
The AOW course is designed to advance your diving, plenty of people take it straight after their Open Water course as a way of getting some more time with an instructor in a controlled environment, that being said there are divers out there who passed their OW and then got a few dives under their belts prior to booking their AOW. There really isn't a right way or wrong way of doing it.
No matter your experience, you're bound to get something out of the course in addition to the qualification to go to a greater depth.
This course opens the door to a number of specialties that have AOW is a pre-requisite, it's also the course that people remember most fondly.
So, what is the Advanced Open Water?
Taking place over 5 Open Water dives, it's typically done over a weekend but we can fit around the class if mid-week works better. There are NO pool sessions, there's not much theory either - at this level it's all about going diving and having fun in a safe manner.
As part of the five dives, you have to do the following;
Deep
Navigation
After that you can choose from a whole host of dives to see what you like, our choices for the remaining three are normally taken from the following;
Wreck
DSMB
Search & Recovery
Night
Nitrox
Once you've passed the course, you'll be qualified and confident to dive to 30m. This opens up a much wider range of suitable dive sites at home and abroad as well as giving you the confidence to dive them, you'll also have a greater understanding about what flavour diving is your thing and which kinds you'd rather leave to other people!
Which three dives would you do as part of the course?
Wreck
Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB)
Search & Recovery
Night
This course runs all year round (we're not constrained by pool availability) and never in a group larger than 4 so you can be confident of receiving the best instruction and getting the most out of the course.
